How Many Amateurs Qualified For The 153rd Open Championship At Royal Portrush?
The fourth and final major championship of the year is finally here as all of the world’s best golfers head to Royal Portrush for the 153rd Open Championship.
The likes of world number one Scottie Scheffler, defending champion Xander Schauffele and career Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy will all be in action at The Open 2025, alongside a number of amateur players.
Whilst an amateur golfer is highly unlikely to win The Open, each of the qualifiers will have their sights set on making the cut. Even that would be an achievement, with the best golf betting sites offering prices on which amateurs will indeed play the weekend.

The Open Amateurs: Meet The Nine Amateur Qualifiers
Justin Hasting – 2025 Latin America Amateur Champion
Having won the 2025 Latin America Amateur Championship by a single stroke, Justin Hasting has qualified for the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
This triumph meant that Hasting also booked his place at the at both The Masters and US Open earlier this year.
Hasting missed the cut at Augusta back in April, but finished in a tie for 55th at the 125th US Open at Oakmont on a score of +15. This was enough to win the low amateur prize as virtue of being the only amateur to make the cut.
Bryan Newman – 2025 Africa America Champion
At the age of just 17, Bryan Newman won the 2025 Africa American Championship in his native South Africa back in February.
This win earned Newman a spot in The Open 2025 field and he will be one of the amateurs teeing it up at Royal Portrush.
He will have his sights firmly set on winning the coveted Silver Medal as the low amateur at The Open Championship.
Ethan Fang – 2025 Amateur Champion
In his first ever trip to Europe, Ethan Fang won The Amateur Championship and thus booked his place at the 153rd Open Championship.
The American is seventh in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and will make his Open debut at Royal Portrush this year as one of nine amateurs in the field.
Xander Schauffele vies to become the 17th back-to-back Open Championship winner in history, and Fang will be there first-hand to see if his fellow American can do just that.
Filip Jakubcik – 2025 European Amateur Champion
Filip Jakubcik is the fourth amateur golfer on this list who will tee it up at Royal Portrush Golf Club on Thursday, July 17.
The University of Arizona student won the 2025 European Amateur Championship, which has booked him a slot in The Open 2025 this year alongside the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and co.
Cameron Adam – The Open Amateur Series Winner
After winning The Open Amateur Series, Cameron Adam will take to the hallowed fairways of Royal Portrush for the 153rd Open Championship.
The Scotsman won the St Andrews Links Trophy back in June, helping him qualify for The Open this month on the north coast of Northern Ireland.
As a Scottish representative, Adam will tee it up ay Royal Portrush alongside fellow Scotsman and one of the Scottish Open past winners Robert MacIntyre.
Frazer Jones – Burnham & Berrow (Final Qualifying)
Frazer Jones is one of the four amateur golfers who made it into the Open Championship field this year courtesy of success at the Final Qualifying Stage.
The UNC Charlotte standout qualified from Burnham & Barrow, making four straight birdies on his final nine to all but book his place in The Open 2025.
Jones finished in fourth place on -7 par, meaning he qualified alongside a few other established professional golfers.
Connor Graham – Dundonald Links (Final Qualifying)
Connor Graham (pictured at the top) birdied the first play-off hole at Dundonald Links Final Qualifying to seal his spot at the 153rd Open Championship.
The Texas Tech standout is one of four amateurs to have qualified through Final Qualifying. Graham was one of a few qualifiers from Dundonald Links, with Lee Westwood being another notable name to make it.
Graham will join Shane Lowry, who was the last Open Championship winner at Royal Portrush in 2019, and co in what will be his first appearance in The Open.
Sebastian Cave – Royal Cinque Ports (Final Qualifying)
Sebastian Cave, like fellow UNC Charlotte standout Frazer Jones, booked his place in the 153rd Open Championship field thanks to rounds of 67-72 at Royal Cinque Ports in Final Qualifying.
LIV Golf star Dean Burmester won the site at -10 with a closing round of 64, with some other big names missing out.
English golf veteran Ian Poulter and his son Luke both missed out on a spot at The Open 2025, despite both finishing on -1 par.
Richard Teder – West Lancashire (Final Qualifying)
The nineth and final amateur player who has made it to Royal Portrush for the 153rd Open Championship is Estonian standout amateur Richard Teder.
Teder qualified from the West Lancashire site of Final Qualifying in the most dramatic of fashions. In a four-player play-off, Teder holed out from the fairway for eagle, booking his place at The Open 2025 in the most sensational of ways.
Established former PGA Tour player Lucas Herbert qualified from West Lanchashire, with Teder the only amateur to qualify from the same course. This means that Teder is now the first Estonian to ever qualify for The Open Championship.
