Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has defended Guglielmo Vicario following his mistake against Fulham, dismissing calls for him to be dropped.
Frank has praised Vicario’s consistency and character, confirming he will be in goal for Spurs’ meeting with Newcastle on Tuesday.
Thomas Frank Makes Vicario Call Ahead of Newcastle
Tottenham suffered a 2-1 defeat at home against Fulham on Saturday.
The hosts conceded two goals in the opening six minutes, with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s error contributing to the second and leading to him being booed by some fans.
Former Premier League star Gabby Agbonlahor criticised fans’ behaviour, while Thomas Frank said they were not Spurs supporters.
Following the defeat against Fulham, some fans have called for Frank to drop Vicario. However, the Danish manager has clarified that he has no intention of benching the 29-year-old.
Answering whether Vicario will be dropped for Tuesday’s game against Tottenham, Frank said:
“Oh no, not for me, he made one mistake.
“Everyone makes mistakes. It’s about how you carry yourself in good and bad times, and he is very consistent. His character is fantastic in every aspect.”

While Vicario’s position is secure for the time being, Frank himself is under huge pressure. The defeat on Saturday has left Spurs in 12th place in the Premier League table.
Unless the Lilywhites hit their stride, Frank could be out of a job before the season ends.
At 4/1, Frank is the second favourite to go in the Premier League sack race odds market. Leeds United manager Daniel Farke is the current leader at 8/15.
Tottenham Not Planning to Replace Vicario in January
In recent weeks, there has been speculation regarding Tottenham’s potential interest in signing a goalkeeper in the January transfer window. Those rumours escalated after Guglielmo Vicario’s costly error in the defeat against Fulham.
However, a report from TEAMTalk claims that Tottenham are not looking for a new first-choice goalkeeper.
If they sign a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window, he would serve as Vicario’s understudy.
The Tottenham hierarchy has long seen Vicario as an integral part of their project, and the mistake against Fulham has not changed their mind.
Tottenham bosses believe Vicario possesses excellent leadership abilities and could captain the team in the future.
Vicario joined from Empoli for a potential £17.2 million fee, including add-ons, in the summer of 2023. He has since played 75 Premier League games for Spurs, making 217 saves and keeping 15 clean sheets.
His contract with the club expires in June 2028.
