Sunderland are holding talks to sign goalkeeper Jonas Omlin, which will allow Anthony Patterson to leave for the Championship.
Patterson was a key part in the Black Cats’ promotion last season, but has dropped to second choice following the summer arrival of the highly impressive Robin Roefs.
West Brom wanted Patterson as they look for quality and Championship experience in goal, but look set to sign Bristol City’s Max O’Leary.

Sunderland Eye Jonas Omlin
Reports claim that Sunderland have opened talks with Borussia Monchengladbach to assess the possibility of signing Omlin.
The 32-year-old keeper is the club’s second-choice and has yet to make an appearance in the league this season.
It’s claimed that the Black Cats will look at bringing the keeper in on loan for the rest of the season, which would then free up space for Patterson to leave.
Omlin has four caps to his name for Switzerland and played for Basel and Montpellier before moving to Germany.
Since moving to Monchengladbach three years ago, he’s made 34 league appearances and has a contract with the club until the summer of 2027.
Omlin would arrive as Sunderland’s second choice, given the form of Roefs this season. The Black Cats have exceeded expectations and currently sit ninth, just three points off Liverpool in fourth.
Championship Competition For Anthony Patterson
West Brom were eager to sign Patterson as their 43 goals conceded this season is the second worst behind rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday.
However, they have looked elsewhere, given the necessity to bring in a new face.
Alan Nixon have reported that numerous Championship sides may look at Patterson including Leicester, Millwall and QPR.
Stoke City may also enter the race after they were dealt a fresh injury blow.
Mark Robins’ side signed Gavin Bazunu on loan last week following the long-term injury to Victor Johansson, but they confirmed their new signing will miss six weeks with a thigh injury.
That leaves youngster Tommy Simkin as the only fit shot stopper, and Robins may look to act or risk falling behind in the race for the play-offs.
Patterson was Sunderland’s first-choice stopper for three years in the Championship and has made over 150 senior appearances for the Black Cats.
