Abdullah Mason - Boxing (1)

If successful in his vacant WBO World Lightweight Title fight this weekend, Abdullah Mason would become the youngest world champion in boxing.

At just 21-years-old, the American southpaw fighter would become the youngest active world champion if he beats Britain’s Noakes at The Ring IV: Night of the Champions.

Abdullah Mason Could Become Youngest World Champion In Boxing At 21

Abdullah Mason vs Sam Noakes is just one of four world title fights on Saturday’s Ring IV: Night of Champions card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Although this card doesn’t have the most world title fights on one night in boxing history, there are four top-class world level fights across four different weight divisions.

Mason vs Noakes goes down for the vacant WBO World Lightweight Title, with one fighter able to make boxing history with victory. Both fighters are undefeated, with Mason boasting a 19-0 (17 KO’s) record and Noakes 17-0 (15 KO’s) himself.

If it’s Noakes who claims victory, he will become the UK’s fourth active world champion. Nick Ball, Lewis Crocker and Fabio Wardley are the only British fighters holding world titles as of today.

If it’s America’s Mason who gets the job done and becomes world champion, he would write his name into the history books and become the youngest male world champion in boxing today at just 21-years-old.

There have of course been younger world champions in boxing history, but should Mason win this weekend and have that WBO 135-pound crown around his waist, he will become the youngest active world champion in the sport.

Mike Tyson infamously became world heavyweight champion at 20-years-old, with several other fighters in the past having won world titles in their teens. Wilfried ‘El Radar’ Benitez is the youngest world champion in history, capturing the WBA World Super-Lightweight Title when he was just 17 years, five months and 24 days old.

Who Is Currently The Youngest Boxing World Champion?

Camila Zamorano is currently the youngest active world champion in the sport of boxing. However, she is a female fighter and competes in the atomweight division, meaning some fans don’t fully recognise her achievement. At 17-years-old, she captured the WBC crown at 105-pounds.

In terms of men’s boxing the youngest world champion in boxing today is Xander Zayas. The Puerto Rican fighter became world champion in winning the vacant WBO World Super-Welterweight Title in July when he was just 22-years-old. He has since turned 23, but remains the youngest world champion in boxing.

Zayas vs Abass Baraou is confirmed for a super-welterweight unification on January 31, so the Puerto Rican could hold the record for being the youngest unified world champion in boxing if he beats Baraou early next year.

This Saturday night in Riyadh at The Ring IV: Night of the Champions, Abdullah Mason is supremely confident of stealing Zayas’ thunder and becoming the youngest world champion in boxing at just 21-years-old.

Should he do so, he would also cement himself as one of the best lightweights in the world. The 135-pound division is stacked, particularly in America, so should Mason win the WBO crown and become world champion, in doing so he would solidify himself as one of the world’s best fighters.
