How the Carabao Cup Second-Round Draw Works
The draw will be held during the build-up to the Devon derby between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City. As the draw is staged around a live first-round tie rather than as a standalone event, its exact start time can shift depending on how the match unfolds.
The first two rounds are regionalised into northern and southern sections to reduce midweek travel for lower-league clubs. At this stage, sides can only be drawn against opponents from their own half of the country.
The 11 Premier League clubs entering the draw are Brentford, Chelsea, Fulham, Newcastle United, Everton, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur, Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City. They join the first-round winners in the second round.
The remaining nine Premier League clubs, who are competing in the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League this season, receive byes to the third round. That group includes defending champions Manchester City, who beat Arsenal in March to lift the trophy last season.
