Chelsea Praised After Showing Support For ‘Record Breaking’ Safer Gambling Week

Chelsea have been picked out for special mention by the UK’s Betting and Gaming Council after the club’s public display of support for a responsible gambling campaign.

The 2025 Club World Cup champions took to social media last month to help publicise Safer Gambling Week, which ran from November 17 to 23.

Chelsea struck a partnership with sportsbook Betway last season to be the club’s Official European Betting Partner.

The Blues don’t have a front-of-shirt sponsor, but Betway’s logo and advertising is displayed around Stamford Bridge on match days.

Betway is one of the sports betting and iGaming Brands owned by global operator Super Group.

The official thumbs up for Chelsea has landed at a time when the future of Enzo Maresca is being questioned.

After the latest downturn in form there is already speculation around who could be next Chelsea manager.

Backing A Safe Bet At The Bridge

Chelsea posted one of Safer Gambling Week’s promotional images to the 25 million followers of their official X account on November 19.

The message accompanying it read: “We are proud to work with our partner Betway and support Safer Gambling week.”

Safer Gambling Week is an industry-led initiative which promotes responsible betting.

The annual event highlights how players can set deposit and time limits on their betting activity along with other more forceful tools such as GAMSTOP’s self-exclusion scheme.

BGC Give Thanks To The Blues

In the Betting and Gaming Council’s (BGC) review, the standards body revealed that this year’s Safer Gambling Week had set new records for engagement.

“Safer Gambling Week 2025 has delivered its strongest results to date, generating more than 80 million impressions across X, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram,” it said.

“Newly released data from the campaign, which ran from 17 to 23 November, shows a significant 40% increase on last year’s performance.

“The initiative also attracted significant political support, with a record number of senior cross-party MPs and peers lending their backing.

“Among them were Gambling Minister Baroness Twycross, Shadow DCMS Secretary Nigel Huddleston MP, and Shadow Gambling Minister Louie French MP.

“This year’s campaign again received full endorsement from the Gambling Commission and its Chief Executive, Andrew Rhodes.

“Chelsea FC was among the well-known football clubs to support Safer Gambling Week this year, sending the safer gambling message out to its 25 million followers on X.”

Betway Banned From Using Chelsea’s Badge

Betway landed itself in hot water with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in October.

Somebody had reported the firm to the ASA after Chelsea’s badge could be seen in one of its YouTube adverts.

The ASA ruling on Betway noted that the pre-roll ad “seen on 17 May 2025, featured football fans wearing clothing and scarves with the Chelsea FC logo”.

The UK-licensed betting firm argued that as the London club’s Official European Betting Partner it had a contractual right to use the logo for an advert that was targeted at over-25s.

The ASA declared that it did not regard YouTube as safely safely age restricted.

Children can use a false date of birth when setting up an account.

As such, advertisers cannot guarantee that their content would exclude under-18s.

That is a problem beyond Betway’s control.

The firm countered, saying banning the advert could set a “damaging precedent for gambling sponsorships in sport”.

Chelsea even spoke up on Betway’s behalf.

The club said it works with all its partners to ensure compliance with standards and practices across the industry.

“Our collaboration with Betway was no exception,” said a spokesperson.”

“Both parties believed the content of this advertisement was fully compliant and adhered to all guidelines.”

Betway’s appeal fell on deaf ears and the ASA ruled that the ad should not appear again.
