Crystal Palace pulled off a remarkable 1-0 FA Cup win over Man City – bagging their first major trophy in their 164-year history – and in the process have now also set up a clash with title winners Liverpool in the Community Shield – the traditional new football season curtain-raiser.

The Community Shield Date 2025 will be played on Sunday 10th August 2025, with the kick-off time 3pm and, of course, at Wembley Stadium.

This will be the first time Liverpool and Crystal Palace have met in the Community Shield and also the first time the pair have faced-off at Wembley.

Liverpool and Palace also warmed up for their Community Shield clash on Sunday 25th May – in the last league fixture for both sides last season.

Who Plays In The Community Shield Each Season?

The Community Shield match each season marks the start of the new season – and is contested by the previous season’s FA Cup and Premier League winners.

If the Premier League winners also won the FA Cup that season, then they will face the league runners-up.

Who Won The Community Shield Last Season (2024)?

Last season (2024) the new season pipe-opener saw Manchester rivals City and United lock horns in the Community Shield.

The match was drawn 1-1, so went to penalties, which Manchester City won 7-6.

That win was Manchester City’s seventh Community Shield success. Having last won the match in 2019, when again winning on penalties (5-4 vs Liverpool).

How Many Times Have Crystal Palace Won The Community Shield?

Crystal Palace have NEVER played in a FA Community Shield match. As prior to their 2025 FA Cup win, the Eagles never won either the Premier League (or old League One) or the FA Cup.

The Eagles lifted their first major trophy in their 164-year history when seeing off Manchester City in a gutsy FA Cup at Wembley in 2025 – and will be back to the famous London stadium on 9th August to face Liverpool.

Crystal Palace’s Europa League Place Still In The Balance

Having won the FA Cup, Palace also had a spot in the Europa League for next season.

However, due to ongoing UEFA multi-club ownership rules – their place is now in doubt.

This is because former owner John Textor, who has now sold his Palace shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, was also involved with French side Lyon.

Lyon also qualified for the Europa League, but rules state that two sides with the same owners can’t compete in the same competitions.

In an added twist Lyon were threatened with relegation from Ligue 1 due to financial issues. But they have recently successfully won an appeal against this.

Had Lyon been relegated, this would have solved the issues for Palace. However, now they are still in Ligue 1, and as they finished higher in their league (6th) than the Eagles, Lyon are more than certain to keep their Europa League place.

A UEFA decision on Crystal Palace is expected in the middle of July.

If Palace don’t keep their place, Nottingham Forest, who are in the Europa Conference, could move up.

While Place can’t go into that tournament as another of their owners David Blitzer is also involved in Danish side Brondby, who are in that competition.

Liverpool Fans Expected To Honour Diogo Jota at Community Shield 

Ahead of the Community Shield date 2025, Liverpool fans are also expected to honour Diogo Joto, who died in July in a car accident.

The Portuguese forward was travelling with his brother Andre, who also died, when their car came off the road in Spain on Thursday 3rd July.

Liverpool’s Community Shield date with Palace will be the first competitive game for the Reds since Jota died and fans are expected to pay tribute to the 28 year-old at the match.
