Manchester United have been told to appoint Roy Keane as their new manager, with links to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being branded as ‘ridiculous’.

Manchester United Told to Appoint Roy Keane

Former England international Danny Murphy has urged Manchester United to appoint Roy Keane as their new manager following the departure of Ruben Amorim earlier this week.

United parted ways with the Portuguese coach after a 1-1 draw against Leeds on Sunday.

He led as the favourite in the Premier League sack race odds market at the time of his sacking.

Darren Fletcher has taken over in an interim capacity for the time being, with his first fixture as Red Devils boss ending in a 2-2 draw against relegation battlers Burnley on Wednesday night.

Reports suggest that the Scotsman’s tenure is set to be a short one, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tipped to be reappointed as Manchester United manager until the end of the 2025-26 season.

Solskjaer was spotted in Cheshire amid reports linking him with the job on Tuesday morning.

Speaking on Match of the Day following United’s stalemate at Turf Moor in midweek, ex-Liverpool and Tottenham defender Murphy branded Solskjaer’s potential appointment as ‘ridiculous’.

He said: “The [rumours] of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coming back are crazy.

“Manchester United paid him to leave a few years ago because he ultimately failed – and now they’re going to pay him to come back?

“It seems ridiculous when you have options like Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher is a decent coach, and then you’ve got someone like Roy Keane, who the fans would love to come back.”

Murphy continued: “Some people might think that might be chaotic but he’s a leader.

“They need someone to galvanise everybody and I’m not sure Solskjaer is the man to do that. It’s a big transition now for Manchester United again.”

Keane is currently seen as an outsider for the United job, priced at 50/1 to take over.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Favoured for United Job

Meanwhile, Solskjaer is firmly the favourite in the next Manchester United manager odds market.

The Norwegian is at a price of 8/11 to return to Old Trafford for a second spell as head coach.

He was first appointed as Red Devils boss as a temporary replacement for Jose Mourinho in 2018 before being offered the job on a permanent basis after impressing in the role.

Solskjaer lasted three years as United boss before being sacked in November 2021.

Other options include former Red Devils midfielder Carrick, who Murphy mentioned in his rant on Wednesday night. He is the second favourite to take over, priced at 7/2 in our market.

The former England international has been out of work since being sacked by Middlesbrough last summer. He also features as the favourite in the next West Brom manager odds market.

Additionally, Carrick is the second favourite in the next West Ham manager odds market.

Former Red Devils interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and ex-Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca are reported as leading candidates for the United job, too.
