European Tour Group’s chief executive officer Guy Kinnings has provided an update on the 2027 Ryder Cup captaincy and Luke Donald’s potential third stint as skipper.
Donald has led Team Europe to back-to-back victories over America in both Rome and New York, with speculation over him possibly captaining Team Europe for a third successive Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in 2027.
Europe Ryder Cup Chief Opens Up On Luke Donald Captaincy For 2027 Ryder Cup
Europe’s Ryder Cup record when playing in America hasn’t been great over the years, but that didn’t stop them from beating Team USA on their own patch back in September at the 45th Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
Europe dominated the opening two days of foursomes and four-ball action, before stumbling over the line in Sunday’s 12 singles matches to secure back-to-back Ryder Cup victories courtesy of a 15-13 win at Bethpage.
Winning an away Ryder Cup is one of the biggest achievements in professional golf, which is exactly what captain Luke Donald and his 12 world-class European players did back in September in New York.
Having led Team Europe to victory in both 2023 and 2025 in Rome and New York respectively, many European golf fans have called for Donald to lead the team once again for a third successive time at the 46th Ryder Cup.
Donald is already considered one of the best Ryder Cup captains Europe has ever had, and he remains one of the outstanding candidates for Adare Manor in 2027 too.
Making the Ryder Cup even bigger and better at Adar Manor will be a central part of Europe’s debrief following this year’s victory at Bethpage Black, with appointing the European captain another important part of that debrief.
The Ryder Cup will celebrate its centenary edition in 2027, and European Tour Group’s chief executive officer Guy Kinnings has provided an update on whether Luke Donald could lead Team Europe for a third successive Ryder Cup in Ireland in two years time.
Judging by his comments in the immediate aftermath of the famous 2025 Ryder Cup victory in New York, it seems that Donald could be tempted to have a crack at an unprecedented hat-trick. Kinnings is certainly open to the idea too.
‘What Luke Has Achieved As Ryder Cup Captain Is Astonishing’ – Guy Kinnings
Europe last won the Ryder Cup in America back in 2012 at the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ prior to this year, so each of the 12 players, vice-captains and captain Luke Donald all pulled off a monumental victory in Bethpage Black which is most definitely not to be forgotten.
However, like anything in sport, attention has already turned to what is next. That happens to be the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland.Â
European Tour Group chief executive officer Guy Kinnings will play a major part in appointing the European Ryder Cup captain for Europe, and it seems that he is most definitely considering the appointment of Donald for a third successive event.
Speaking in Mallorca during the HotelPlanner Tour’s Rolex Grand Final, Kinnings said:
“What Luke has achieved as the Ryder Cup captain is astonishing.
“I’ve known him since he was an amateur and it has been great to see him grow into this role. He’s a truly brilliant leader, he really is,” Kinnings continued.
“He and Diane [Donald’s wife] deserve the time to go away and decompress and enjoy the success and we have to take the time to completely debrief, have a look at everything, learn from it, learn on every aspect.
“We are going to be trying to improve for the next one and, on the captaincy, as we always do, it is a case of listening to players, the captain, vice captains, past captains, a group of stakeholders – all of them.
“I don’t want to be tied to a timeframe. We are not going to be rushed into it. It is important to get it right. So, whether it’s later in the year or in the new year that we make an announcement, we’ll just wait and see,” Kinnings concluded.
Will Luke Donald Captain Europe At 2027 Ryder Cup At Adare Manor?
At this moment in time, it is impossible to tell whether or not Luke Donald will captain Europe at the 2027 Ryder Cup.
Although he is one of the best Europe Ryder Cup captains in history, leading a team in the biennial golf event would certainly be a stressful job. That being said, Donald hasn’t ruled out potentially leading Europe for a monumental hat-trick at Adare Manor in two years time.
Other candidates for the Team Europe captaincy include the likes of major champions Justin Rose and Francesco Molinari. Most golf fans and experts are predicting it will be one of the three, with Donald perhaps still in pole position.
The likelihood is that if Luke Donald wants to stay on as Team Europe Ryder Cup captain, he will be afforded the luxury of deciding that on his own terms.
