John Denton joined Sportscasting in December 2021, bringing 24 years of basketball experience to the site. He attended the University of Tennessee-Martin, where he studied both Communications and Journalism in addition to playing football. After graduating, John worked in the newspaper industry for The Jackson Sun and Florida Today, He has also written for the University of Central Florida, the Orlando Magic and the Associated Press with some of his work appearing on ESPN.com.
As a former athlete, John strives to tell the players’ stories as best as he can. Knowing what goes into each and every game has given him a special appreciation of what takes place between the whistles. That attention to detail has earned him numerous “Best of Gannett” and Associated Press Sports Editors national writing awards, in addition to the respect of Stan Van Gundy and other coaches.
While he’s sat through thousands of shaky renditions of the national anthem and eaten far too many questionable media meals, John still loves the game of basketball. He plays as much pick-up as his knees can handle, hits the golf course and tennis court when he has time, and cheers on his daughter during volleyball games.
