It’s not even been five months since the 2020 edition of The Masters ended and here we are back at Augusta National for the first major championship of 2021. Back in its normal spot on the golf calendar after being postponed last year due to COVID-19, The Masters, as per usual, is shaping up to be a fantastic event. No, Tiger Woods obviously isn’t in the field as he’s still recovering from the single-car accident back in February that resulted in numerous leg injuries but there are still plenty of great storylines at Augusta National this week. Can Dustin Johnson repeat after the most dominant performance in Masters history last fall? With Jordan Spieth back in the winner’s circle, can he win a second green jacket? Can Rory McIlroy finally win the career Grand Slam? Will Bryson DeChambeau be able to card a top-20 finish at Augusta? The list goes on and on. But since we just brought up the big fella, let’s dive into the fact that he’s actually a co-favorite this week. Dustin Johnson surprisingly isn’t the solo favorite at The Masters After shooting a record 20-under at The Masters back in November, one would think Dustin Johnson would be the solo favorite heading into Augusta National this week. But that’s actually not the case. Currently going off at +950, the two-time major champion is at least one of the co-favorites but he’s joined by reigning U.S. Open champ Bryson DeChambeau. Now, DeChambeau, who is currently the fifth-ranked player in the world, has been playing solid golf in 2021, including a win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last month and a third-place finish at The Players Championship. But it’s a little surprising to see him as a co-favorite given the fact he’s never finished inside the top 20 in his four appearances at Augusta National. He was the low amateur at The Masters in 2016 and tied for 21st but that’s actually his best finish in this tournament. Since then, he’s tied for 38th, tied for 29th, and tied for 34th. DeChambeau finished 18 shots behind DJ last fall and Augusta is expected to play even tougher this week. We’re not saying he can’t win this week as he’s obviously a threat every week he tees it up. But a co-favorite alongside a guy that broke The Masters scoring record just five months ago? Jordan Spieth has put himself into the conversation at Augusta National with his recent play RELATED: Jordan Spieth Was Recently the Victim of a Hilarious Yet Cruel Prank Even just two months ago, nobody was really talking about Jordan Spieth having any kind of chance to win The Masters — the tie for 46th last fall didn’t help. He’d dropped out of the top 90 in the world rankings, hadn’t won a tournament since The Open Championship in 2017, and had just gone through an eight-tournament stretch in which he made just three cuts. But these last two months have been different. Beginning with the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Spieth has finished in the top 15 in six of his last seven starts with four finishes inside the top four, including his win on Sunday at the Valero Texas Open. And speaking of the top four, Spieth is now in the top four favorites at Augusta National. At +1100, the 2015 Masters champ sits behind only DJ and DeChambeau and holds the same odds as Justin Thomas.
