Arne Slot will be rueing the missed opportunity to sign Marc Guehi after Joe Gomez’s latest setback added to their defensive woes.
Liverpool were complacent in their deal to land the former Crystal Palace man who sealed his switch to rivals Manchester City this month.
Slot is now facing the prospect of having just one senior central defender for their Champions League contest with Qarabag on Wednesday.
Joe Gomez Injury Concern For Liverpool
Gomez, who has endured his fair share of injuries during his time at the Reds, has missed training this week after he was forced off with a hip injury in the defeat at Bournemouth.
It’s unclear on the timeline of his recovery, but he will sit out of the final Champions League phase game before the knockouts.
Slot will also be without Ibrahim Konate, who has missed the last two matches.
Konate has been granted compassionate leave following the death of his father last week.
Liverpool’s only other recognised central defender is Giovanni Leoni, who is a long-term absentee after cruelly tearing his ACL on his debut in September.
Slot will now have a decision to make against Qarabag on who will partner Virgil Van Dijk at the back.
Waturu Endo replaced Gomez against the Cherries while Andy Robertson, who is being linked with Tottenham, has featured there this season.
Liverpool are in a commanding position to secure their automatic qualification into the Champions League round of 16. A win will guarantee their passage, while a draw should also be enough.
Roma To Keep Liverpool Defender
Liverpool’s defensive crisis also comes on the back of reports that Kostas Tsimikas is set to stay at Roma for the rest of the season.
The two clubs had been in talks to cancel his loan spell with his minutes in Serie A limited, but Roma are struggling to find a replacement after having a bid rejected for Wolves’ David Moller Wolfe.
Roma’s director of football, Ricky Massara, recently provided a transfer update and said: “We are in a dialogue with Liverpool, and we’ll see how that evolves over the next few days.”
With Tsimikas expected to stay in Italy, that will all but end Tottenham’s hopes of signing Robertson.
Spurs’ move for the Scotland international hit an impasse after Liverpool blocked his move because it would leave them short of options at left-back.
Robertson would be open to leaving Liverpool as he approaches the final few months of his contract at Anfield.
