Rangers Appoint Barry Ferguson Until End Of Season Following Philippe Clement Departure

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has been named head coach until the end of the season after former boss Philippe Clement departed the Glasgow side.

Ferguson played more than 400 times for Rangers across two spells at Ibrox. He earned 45 caps for Scotland from 1998-2009, before retiring as a player in 2015.

Since moving into coaching he has worked with English side Blackpool, who he also played for. Most recently, he was the manager of Alloa Athletic from 2021-2022.

Joining Ferguson in the dugout will be Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor.

The new-look coaching group will take charge of their first match on Wednesday night, with Rangers visiting Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership.

Assistant manager Issame Charai took Monday’s training session and will remain with the club.

But Philippe Clement’s departure has also seen coaches Alex Rae, Colin Stewart and Stephan van der Heyden leave the club.

Clement’s final game in charge was Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren, which left Rangers now 13 points adrift of rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Barry Ferguson’s Rangers Return A Temporary One

Following the confirmation of Ferguson’s appointment as caretaker manager, the club confirmed a permanent boss will be appointed ‘in the coming months’.

Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart admitted: “The issues we are facing run deeper than the manager”.

Discussing Clement’s departure, he said: “When I spoke to RangersTV last week, I was clear that everyone is judged on results and nobody will get unlimited time in any role at the club.

“Ultimately, the team’s response following their early exit from the Scottish Cup was a cause for deep concern, leading the board to conclude that action had to be taken now.”

Stewart wished Clement well in his future roles, describing the Frenchman as ‘a fine man’.

On the club’s decision to bring in club legend Ferguson, Steward added: “We appreciate him and his team stepping into the role at this difficult time.”
