Jon Jones - UFC Heavyweight Title - UFC 309 Belts On The Line

The feud between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall continues, with Jones now labelling the UFC Heavyweight Champion ‘incredibly overrated’ following his UFC 321 bout with Ciryl Gane.

Jones feels that Gane was well on top and beating Aspinall up, before the fight was called a no contest due to Aspinall being unable to continue following a deep eye poke from the challenger.

Jon Jones Labels Tom Aspinall As ‘Incredibly Overrated’

Although the Tom Aspinall vs Ciryl Gane fight in the UFC 321 main event only lasted less than one round, Jon Jones feels he has seen enough to make a fairly brutal assessment of Aspinall’s ability.

All of Tom Aspinall’s stats pointed towards a routine victory over the French challenger, but the opening round certainly didn’t play out that way with Gane instead on top and on his way to winning the first round.

Then of course came the fight-ending eye poke, with the bout being called a no contest. However, MMA legend Jones feels he saw more than enough to know that the English MMA star perhaps isn’t all he has been hyped up to be.

Jones has labelled Aspinall as ‘incredibly overrated’ and that he has so many holes in his game. This of course isn’t the first time Jones has had a negative word to say about Aspinall, with countless back and forth on social media prior to Jones retirement earlier this year.

Jones continued to troll Aspinall after the UFC 321 eye poke incident at a recent Dirty Boxing Championship event, where the two-division UFC king turned up to the event on horseback with the horse itself wearing an eye-patch.

Although Jones has had a lot to say on Aspinall’s UFC 321 performance, many fans and Aspinall himself feel that ‘Bones’ blatantly ducked the Englishman and instead opted to retire from the sport for good seeing as he didn’t want anything to do with Aspinall.

The only difference about Jones’ latest insults are that he actually came out and spoke on Aspinall in an interview, chatting to the No Scripts podcast about the UFC 321 fight and his feelings on what went down in Abu Dhabi on October 25.

‘He’s A One-Trick Pony’ – Jon Jones Continues Tom Aspinall Insults

Although Jon Jones has praised Tom Aspinall as being a top athlete, he feels that he is overrated and has gaping holes in his MMA game as a whole:

“Tom’s a great athlete, but I do feel like he’s a one-trick pony,” Jones revealed on the No Scripts podcast.

“I believe that his wrestling and jiu-jitsu is incredibly overrated. He has a beautiful one-two, that’s really about it.

“He couldn’t touch Ciryl Gane at all. That’s the way I felt. I feel like Gane was just getting warned up. He was touching him. He was so comfortable,” concluded the greatest MMA fighter of all time.

Jones of course won the UFC Heavyweight Title with a Round 1 submission victory over Gane, with many people now feeling that this performance from Aspinall could well tempt Jones back into the octagon for a fight with the Englishman once and for all.

Will Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall Ever Fight Each Other?

With Jon Jones’ latest insults of Tom Aspinall, it seems that he may be more up for the task of facing the English MMA phenom for the UFC Heavyweight Title, if indeed he defeats Ciryl Gane in a rematch.

A fight between Jones and Aspinall remains the single biggest fight in the UFC heavyweight division, perhaps with the exception of Alex Pereira moving up to heavyweight to fight either Jones in a ‘G.O.A.T’ match-up or Aspinall for the heavyweight belt and the chance to become the first ever three-weight UFC champion in history.

Jones has pleaded with Dana White for a UFC White House main event slot, revealing his intentions of facing Pereira in what would be one of the biggest fights in MMA history. Period.

However, a fight for the belt with Aspinall at UFC White House also makes sense. Should Aspinall rematch Gane early next year and successfully defend his UFC Heavyweight Title, he may well then defend it against ‘Bones’ at the White House in what would be a truly remarkable main event.

Although Jones is currently still retired, he has made it abundantly clear that he wishes to return to the octagon and is desperate to fight at the White House next summer. Whether it be against Pereira, Aspinall or someone else remains to be seen, or else he mightn’t return to the cage at all.

As of today, UFC President White is yet to reveal who will headline UFC White House on June 14. The event needs the biggest names and best fighters, so perhaps Aspinall vs Jones for the UFC heavyweight Title is the perfect match-up to headline the event on the South Lawn.
