The Washington Football Team took down their division rival New York Giants in dramatic fashion on Thursday Night Football. After initially missing the field goals, the WFT got another shot at it when a Giants’ lineman jumped offside. WFT’s kicker made the second attempt to give his team the win. The best part, however, may have come after the game. That’s when the WFT Twitter account savagely shaded the Giants for the loss.

The Week 2 Thursday Night Football matchup may not have produced the best game so far in the NFL season. But, it was definitely one of the most exciting and dramatic outcomes so far.

Coming off the exhilarating Las Vegas Raiders vs. Baltimore Ravens Monday Night-er, the league got another thrilling game. The end result was a 30-29 Washington Football Team win over the New York Giants. The path to get there wasn’t exactly great football, but it made for a fun night.

The game was a back-a-forth affair that featured six lead changes and six scoring drives in the fourth quarter. The last stanza also featured an (almost) game-winning touchdown that Giants WR Darius Slayton dropped and an (almost) game-ending interception by WFT QB Taylor Heinicke.

The pivotal moment came in the third quarter, though. That’s when Giants coach Joe Judge inexplicably didn’t go for two after going up 19-14. That decision is what ultimately allowed the WFT to win the game on the last-second field goal.

It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win. And, a divisional win is even better than that, especially when your team’s social media account gets to talk trash afterward.

The WFT Twitter account took a brutal (and hilarious) shot at the Giants after the win

Most pro sports teams’ social media accounts are relatively bland. They show interviews, promote team events, and produce glowing articles about the players and coaches. It’s rare that an account hits big with a hilarious post. That’s exactly what the Washington Football Team’s Twitter account did, though, after the team’s late-game win against the Giants.

The hilariously nasty tweet showed a clip from the old game show, Deal or No Deal. In it, one of the show’s models opens her case. She then gets a pained look on her face when she sees what is inside.

Instead of a dollar amount in the case, though, there is “0-2” for the Giants’ current 2021 record. The contestant, now with a NY Giants logo superimposed on his face, walks away in disgust while host Howie Mandell clutches his head in horror.

It was a perfect tweet to shade your division rival, especially in a division where they are the only team that doesn’t seem like it’s better this season.

The NFC East is no longer the NFC ‘Least’

The defending NFC East champion Washington Football Team was one of the worst playoff teams in NFL history in 2020.

The WFT became just the fifth team in NFL history to reach the playoffs, and two of those teams (the 4-5 Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions) made it in the strike-shortened 1982 season. The other losing teams in the playoffs were the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks in 2010 and the 7-8-1 Carolina Panthers in 2014, per NBC Sports.  

As bad as it sounds to be one of the worst playoff teams of all time, imagine what it’s like for the three teams that wouldn’t beat Washington out for that mandated playoff spot.

In 2021, the division seems to be much better.

The Giants are still the Giants and are in massive rebuild mode (as Thursday showed). The other three teams should be improved this season, though.

The Dallas Cowboys got their superstar QB Dak Prescott back after a gruesome injury last season, and that, in and of itself, should make the ‘Boys better. The Philadelphia Eagles defense looks to be improved from last season, and, although it’s just been one game, second-year signal-caller Jalen Hurts looks like he’s leveled up as well.

Washington did lose its starting QB in Ryan Fitzpatrick, but as Heinicke proved Thursday, he is good enough to manage and even win NFL games.

While none of the NFC East teams are likely Super Bowl contenders, there are at least a few that could put up respectable win totals this season. That should be enough to make the NFC East no longer the NFC “Least” and allow another division to pick up the mantle of worst in the league.

After one week of games, it looks like the AFC South and the NFC North will compete for that title this season.
