Patrick Mahomes joined the Kansas City Chiefs as a rookie in 2017 and that year he only played in the final regular-season game. The following year, head coach Andy Reid handed over the keys to Mahomes to drive the Chiefs offense.

Since that time, Mahomes has been on a joy ride that’s included trips to three Pro Bowls. In 2018, he was named the AP Offensive Player of the Year and the NFL MVP after throwing for an NFL-leading 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns. In his short but very successful career, has Patrick Mahomes won a Super Bowl?

Excels in college

Coming out of high school, Patrick Mahomes had options. He was a top high school quarterback and pitcher at Whitehouse High School near Tyler, Texas.

He opted to head west to the South Plains in Lubbock and play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. During his freshman year, he started the season as the backup. By season’s end, Mahomes was the starter and played in the final three games, which included a game against Baylor where he threw for a Big 12 record 598 yards with six touchdowns and one interception. He also was a relief pitcher for the Tech baseball team.

After his sophomore season as Tech’s starting quarterback where he threw for 4,653 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions, Mahomes gave up baseball to focus solely on football. During his junior year, it showed.

Patrick Mahomes led the nation in 2016 in yards per game (421), passing yards (5,052), total offense (5,312), and total touchdowns (53). He announced following the season he would forego his final year of college eligibility and enter the 2017 NFL draft.

Patrick Mahomes comes up 1 win short of Super Bowl

After the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, the plan was clear from the start. Andy Reid sat the rookie on the bench that first season, allowing him to watch veteran quarterback Alex Smith run the offense.

The plan worked to perfection as Mahomes didn’t set foot on the field until the final game of the regular season after the Chiefs had already secured a berth in the playoffs. Following the season, Kansas City traded Smith to Washington and turned over the reins to Mahomes.

In 2018, Mahomes shocked the NFL in his first season as the starter, throwing for 5,097 yards with an NFL-best 50 touchdowns. Kansas City finished the regular season with a 12-4 record and won the AFC West title.

Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a win over the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional round before they lost in the AFC Championship to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

Has Patrick Mahomes won a Super Bowl?

After Patrick Mahomes had such an impressive performance in his first year as a starter the year before, expectations were high for Mahomes and the Chiefs in 2019. And he delivered.

Kansas City repeated with a 12-4 regular-season record and another AFC West title. This time, however, they won their divisional round matchup against the Houston Texans, before defeating the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs faced the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54. The game was tied 10-10 heading into halftime. The 49ers scored 10 points in the third quarter to take a 21-10 lead heading into the fourth.

In the final quarter, Mahomes etched his place in NFL history as he led the Chiefs back, scoring 21 unanswered points to win the game 31-20. Mahomes threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a touchdown on the ground and was named Super Bowl MVP.

Mahomes is hoping to repeat this season and win his second Super Bowl against a familiar foe in Tom Brady, who has switched conferences and plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Many experts think if Mahomes can win his second Super Bowl at just 25, he has more than enough time in his career to surpass Brady and his six championship rings and become the GOAT.
