Brett Favre Has a Crystal Clear Stance on Drew Brees and His Controversial Anthem Comments

Earlier this year, Drew Brees put himself in hot water with his comments about national anthem protests. The New Orleans Saints quarterback got blasted by fellow NFL players and even some of his teammates. However, the way he was treated doesn’t sit well with Brett Favre.

And recently, the Green Bay Packers legend sent a clear message about Brees and his controversial national anthem comments.

The death of George Floyd and the Jacob Blake shooting cast an even bigger spotlight on the issue of police brutality. So over the summer, NFL players did not shy away from speaking up about kneeling during the national anthem as a form of peaceful protest.

Dontari Poe ultimately let his actions do the talking. Instead of standing with his teammates during “The Star-Spangled Banner”, the defensive tackle remained on a knee. He became the first player in the history of the Dallas Cowboys to kneel during the national anthem.

After his historic protest, Poe explained the meaning behind it.

“It’s just bringing more awareness to what’s going on in this world – to the racial injustices that’s going on, to the oppression that’s happening to my race, the Black people,” Poe said. “It’s not something that’s going to be solved in a day.”

Of course, his protest occurred just a few months after Drew Brees made his thoughts known about kneeling during the anthem.

Most Saints fans would describe Drew Brees as an excellent leader and role model. However, the future Hall of Famer came under intense scrutiny this summer for his comments about players kneeling during the national anthem.

“I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country,” Brees told Yahoo Finance.

His words drew the ire of both teammates and opponents. Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders expressed their disapproval in public fashion on social media. Malcolm Jenkins also called out the legendary quarterback for his remarks.

Although Brees issued an apology on Instagram, his first attempt didn’t exactly go over too well. But after scorning Donald Trump, he ultimately won his Saints teammates back.

Like Drew Brees, Brett Favre made his feelings clear about NFL players kneeling earlier this year. Back in August, the Hall of Fame quarterback discussed the topic with TMZ Sports.

“I know from being in an NFL locker room for 20 years, regardless of race, background, money you grew up with, we were all brothers it didn’t matter,” Favre said. “Guys got along great. Will that be the same (with kneeling scenario)? I don’t know. If one guy chooses to stand for his cause and another guy chooses to kneel for his cause, is one right and the other wrong? I don’t believe so. We tend to be fixed on highs.”

While national anthem protests have not generated as much discussion in recent months, the topic did come up during Favre’s recent appearance on “America This Week” with Eric Bolling.

The 51-year-old made it quite clear where he stands on Brees and his comments that generated so much controversy this summer.

“I think Drew stated clearly what he was standing for,” Favre said. “He got bullied. There’s no question about it, and he wasn’t wrong.”

He further added, “There’s a lot of things that need to be fixed in this country and this world. The starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints can’t fix it. I certainly can’t fix it. We can all work together.”
