Michael Strahan

Hall of Fame defensive end Michael Strahan puts up with playful sparring from colleagues on Fox NFL Sunday each week during the fall. And Strahan can dish it out, too, alongside fellow analysts Howie Long, Terry Bradshaw, and Jimmy Johnson.

Unfortunately for Strahan, he’s also had to deal with sparring of another sort in the form of a divorce fight that led to an outlandish act by his former wife.

Michael Strahan’s 15-year career with the New York Giants culminated with a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots following the 2007 season. Strahan had come into the league as the Giants’ second-round draft pick out of Texas Southern in 1993.

His career highlights included a league-record 22.5 sacks in the 2001 season, five All-Pro selections on defense, and seven appearances in the Pro Bowl. He finished his career with 141.5 sacks and entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2014 induction class.

Upon retiring, Strahan made an immediate transition to television as an analyst on Fox NFL Sunday. He subsequently picked up additional gigs co-hosting a daytime talk show with Kelly Ripa from 2012-16 and then moved over to Good Morning America.

The worst aspect of being a celebrity is that deeply personal aspects of one’s life get played out in public. It gets easier in many cases for athletes once they retire, since the public sees less of them as time goes on. They more or less become private citizens.

In the case of Michael Strahan, however, there has been no such shield because he went from the very visible role of star defensive end for a Super Bowl championship team to a TV personality widely seen across the country. And, so, both of Strahan’s divorces, as well as his current child custody fight, have played out in front of a national audience.

Strahan married Wanda Hutchins in 1992 while he was still attending Texas Southern. Their marriage produced daughter Tanita and son Michael Jr., but the relationship ended in divorce in 1996, just as Strahan was on the verge of becoming a bona fide NFL star.

Strahan subsequently married Jean Muggli in 1999, coming off of what at the time were the two best seasons of his career. The couple’s twin daughters, Isabella and Sophia, were born in late 2004, but Strahan and Muggli were divorced in July 2006. The divorce didn’t end the acrimony as the two continued a long dispute over property and child support.

The dispute began to play out again this year as Strahan sought full custody of Isabella and Sophia Strahan.

The point at which the crumbling relationship between Michael Strahan and Jean Muggli hit rock bottom before their divorce may have come while the couple lived in Montclair, New Jersey, 10 miles across the Hudson River from Manhattan.

It’s one thing for strangers to see reports of trouble in one’s personal life on TV. It’s quite another for the neighbors to see it up close. With Strahan gone for a weekend, neighbors recounted to the New York Post, Muggi dumped Strahan’s belongings outside their home and put up a “yard sale” sign.

Said one of the neighbors: “I was sorry later on that I did not buy something.”
