Ever wondered why the Super Bowl trophy is called the Vince Lombardi Trophy? Join us as we explain just why that is the case.

Why Is The Super Bowl Trophy Called The Vince Lombardi Trophy?

As the Kansas City Chiefs aim for a Super Bowl three-peat at Super Bowl LIX when they face the Philadelphia Eagles in a repeat of the 2023 NFL showpiece, both teams will be aiming to get their hands on the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The Chiefs have won four Lombardi’s to date, including three in the past five seasons. Their first Super Bowl triumph came back at Super Bowl IV, with Travis Kelce and co now aiming for a record third straight Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The Philadelphia Eagles on the other hand have won just one Super Bowl in their history. This came at Super Bowl LII, with the Eagles having lost three other NFL season finale’s.

Super Bowl LIX sees Jalen Hurts side aim to right the wrongs of two years ago, getting their hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the second time.

But just why is the famous Super Bowl trophy called the Vince Lombardi Trophy?

Well, the trophy is named after Vince Lombardi, who was the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers from 1959-1967. During this time, Lombardi led the Packers to back-to-back Super Bowl triumphs at the end of the 1966 and 1967 NFL seasons.

These were the first two Super Bowl’s ever staged, hence why the trophy is now named after Lombardi.

Who Was Vince Lombardi?

Vince Lombardi was an American football coach in the NFL, managing the Green Bay Packers from 1959-1967.

He is considered by many to be among the greatest coaches and leaders in all American sports, never mind just football. During his coaching career, he was best known as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960s.

During his time as the Packers head coach, Lombardi led his side to three straight and five total NFL Championships in just seven years. Quite a remarkable feat.

This included the inaugural Super Bowl after the 1966 NFL season, as well as winning it the following year making it back-to-back Sper Bowl victories for Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers in the first two Super Bowl’s in history.

Lombardi died in 1970 aged 57.

How Many Super Bowls Did Vince Lombardi Win?

As previously outlined, Vince Lombardi won two Super Bowls with the Green Bay Packers as their head coach.

The first Super Bowl success for Lombardi came in January 1967, where his Packers team beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I following the 1966 NFL season.

At the time, it wasn’t yet called the Super Bowl and was instead named the AFL-NFL World Championship Game.

The following year in January 1968, the Packers and Lombardi won their second successive Super Bowl with a victory over the Oakland Raiders.

How Long Has The Super Bowl Trophy Been Named After Vince Lombardi?

The famous Super Bowl trophy has been called the Vince Lombardi Trophy for quite some time now. Following the death of legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi in September 1970, the trophy was officially renamed in his memory.

This means the trophy has been named after Lombardi for over 55 years now.

The coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy was presented for the first time to the Baltimore Colts following their 16-13 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at Super Bowl V in January 1971.

Now some 55 years on, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will lock horns at Super Bowl LIX, both with the aim of lifting the Vince Lombardy Trophy aloft come full-time.

As game day fast approaches, it is Patrick Mahomes and co who are favorites with the best NFL betting sites to win their third consecutive Super Bowl.
