The Dallas Cowboys have been front and center when it comes to the Earl Thomas sweepstakes. Thomas, a native Texan who grew up a fan of America’s Team, has made no bones about it in the past regarding his desire to play for the Cowboys. In a radio interview on Friday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed that a decision on Thomas will likely happen in the next 48 hours. And by the sounds of it, Cowboys fans should feel encouraged.

Jerry Jones never denied interest in Earl Thomas since Baltimore release

Since the Baltimore Ravens released safety Earl Thomas on August 23, the six-time Pro Bowler has been connected to various teams around the league, but none more so than the Dallas Cowboys. One of the main reasons for that is because the Cowboys organization has never denied an interest in the safety when asked the question.

“One of the biggest things that you weigh, and it’s the obvious, but it’s right, is you evaluate where we are at safety, where we are at the secondary, where we are at our numbers,” Jerry Jones admitted last week during an appearance on the radio station 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “These decisions, like the one you’re talking about with Earl, they’re never served up like a softball. They always come in awkward; they always come in with a little hair on it. That’s where I step in.”

Several days later, Stephen Jones appeared on the same radio station and dodged answering the question, but didn’t deny an interest at the same time.

“We don’t comment on things like that. We found that it probably works better not to say anything until it’s not a point any more or we have him, like Everson Griffen, wearing a Cowboy helmet.”

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix out; Thomas in?

When the Cowboys announced on Thursday the team had released projected starting safety Ha-Ha Clinton Dix, the speculation of Earl Thomas joining the team went into overdrive. Stephen Jones once again went on 105.3 The Fan where he addressed Dix’s departure and the prospect of Thomas joining the organization.

“It just felt like at the end of the day for what we were trying to get done that we needed to go in another direction. Of course, as I always say, we’re always in the market 365 days a year to improve this football team, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.

“Obviously, I won’t speak to any specific players, but we’ll be in the market to improve our football team. We’re certainly going to look at all avenues as we move forward here, and wouldn’t rule anything out.”

Jerry Jones confirms Cowboys deciding on Earl Thomas in 48 hours

On Friday, Jerry Jones made his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan to discuss the latest news within the Cowboys organization. When asked about a report that the Cowboys will be meeting with Thomas in the next 48 hours, Jones had a long, awkward pause, before he answered the question.

“To the extent that there’s a report out there, no, I can’t confirm that in any way. I haven’t heard that. To that end, that we are basically making our roster in the next 48 hours and making decisions on this safety spot and other spots. I can confirm that that process is going on. I don’t know about that report.”

Jones’ uncomfortable hesitation, which the show hosts picked up on, clearly indicated the Cowboys owner was surprised by the report. That report, coupled with Dix’s departure a day earlier, and Jones confirming the team was finalizing safety roster spots in the next 48 hours, seems to be too coincidental for Thomas not to be coming to Dallas. Stay tuned.
