Adam Schefter might've been the first reporter to announce Patrick Mahomes' contract, but he was actually beaten by a liquor store employee.

When ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news of Patrick Mahomes’ record-breaking contract extension on Monday, it sent the Internet into a frenzy. Mahomes became the highest-paid player in NFL history after signing the deal, and Schefter got credit for being the first to report the news. Although Schefter was the first national reporter to announce the deal, he was actually out-scooped an hour earlier by a Kansas City liquor store employee. Mahomes’ contract leaked thanks to six bottles of Dom Perignon.

Adam Schefter reported Patrick Mahomes’ extension at 2:54 p.m.

At 2:54 p.m. ET on Monday afternoon, Adam Schefter tweeted the first update of Patrick Mahomes’ contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs. The ESPN scoop master tweeted that Mahomes and the Chiefs agreed on a 10-year extension. No other info was available at the time.

Immediately after the tweet appeared, Twitter exploded with takes and predictions about how much the contract was worth. Eventually, the details about the contract were released. Ten years, $503 million, and $477 in guarantee mechanisms. The richest contract in NFL history, and it isn’t particularly close.

Schefter received credit for being the first to break the news, but a random Chiefs fan and liquor store employee actually had the story first.

KC Liquor store employee Katie Camlin leaked Mahomes’ deal at 1:21 p.m.

Katie Camlin is a Kansas City, Mo. resident and an avid Chiefs fan. She was enjoying a typical day at her job at Plaza Liquor in Kansas City on Monday when something unusual happened.

A Chiefs employee visited her store and asked for six bottles of Dom Perignon champagne. Now, Dom Perignon is priced at nearly $200 per bottle. This was no normal celebration.

Camlin’s boss told her that the Chiefs employee hinted about a big signing on Monday. He also said it wasn’t defensive end Chris Jones, so Camlin surmised it must be about Mahomes.

Camlin decided to tweet her guess at 1:21 p.m. ET, about 90 minutes before Schefter officially broke the news. She quickly deleted the tweet in fear of getting in trouble, but Camlin still out-scooped the breaking news king.

Katie Camlin now has over 3,000 Twitter followers

Since her debut in the breaking news world, Katie Camlin has gained thousands of followers on her Twitter account. Camlin now has over 3,300 followers, and the number is only growing by the hour.

The liquor store employee has since updated her bio to say “In before Adam Schefter on 7/6.” Not even the best NFL reporters can out-scoop Schefter, so it’s more than fair for Camlin to flaunt her impressive win.

After her tweet, Camlin’s account blew up with replies. She got so much traction on her news-breaking tweet that she deleted it shortly after. She even said her anxiety went “through the roof” and she had to put her phone away.

“I’m putting my phone away for a while. Come to Plaza Liquor and buy beer from me, wear a mask, be kind, Go CHIEFS,” Camlin tweeted after receiving a firestorm of replies.

Camlin may have accidentally out-scooped Schefter this time, but maybe she has a future in the breaking news world.
